As an eclecticist liutaio, Nicola Utili formed himself as an autodidact. Starting off by classical models, at a certain moment of his carrier he elaborated a completely personal model characterised by a total absence of pointed ends. He did not have a positive feedback by the musicians and least of all by the collectors. He simultaneously developed an oil varnish of extraordinary quality. His fame diffused quickly to the point that he eventually became Benito Mussolini's official liutaio. The dictator originally from Predappio in the province of Forlì, was an impassioned violinist amateur. Just for Mussolini, Utili also built a black violin, the symbol color of the Fascist regime.
