A 17th century instrument with double reed. It is smallest of the oboe family. The name comes from Dim-Muse-Bagpipes, hence the name of an old "musette" dance. Musicians such Lully, Rameau, Chèdiville, Charpentier, etc. composed with this instrument. Quite widely used in the 18th and 19th centuries in France, as a popular instrument. It was especially played in country dances. Having a very soft sound it was very frequently coupled with the barrel-organ.
