From “Il Museo della Musica” by Artemio Versari This Instrument, in vogue in the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was gradually replaced by the violoncello. The name viola da gamba derives from the way in which it was played, that is, held between the legs (which traslates to gambe in Italian).
